Valentine Week
The valentine week occurred in the past 4 years in school, it is originally organized by the student guild and often with the purpose of raising the Student Guilds fund for organizing future larger projects and events.
As the secretary of the student guild, we had to plan out a week to celebrate this mostly American holiday, but especially to celebrate love and friendship, more as an activity to promote a more relax an fun environment during breaks and lunch, something for the community to enjoy, which diverges from their daily routine.
We (Thiago, as chairman, and Pedro Bastos as treasurer) thought of means to make this week different form other ones, there came the idea to have people in costumes singing for serenates and a larger quantity of roses so that they could be delivered to a loved one. When we were to decide the roles and share responsibilities everything was a lot simpler, this is when I recalled all the rushing around and long discussions to make decisions during the preparation for the Talent Show. After this extensive process we really learnt more about our strengths and fallacies, which we quickly patched and covered up for each other in order to have a smoother collaborative work.
This is when I offered to do the serenates, because the three of us knew I was no use selling things behind a desk. I was aware that my singing talents were not my forte, but I love performing and making fun of the school community, since it is a small one I know well enough most of the people and have liberty enough to joke with both staff and students. Even though I was responsible for a part of this project which I have to work with only my strengths, I still went out of my comfort zone since I had to make a fool of my self in costume and sing where I was required, that meant in the lunch room, where everyone was staring, during tutorials, with entire classes drawing attention to my performance, etc.
We planned on having all the services functioning from the first week, for that to happen we knew that advertising the activity was necessary, so posters were spread out around school, Thiago and I put together the poster which was pink and visually attractive. This was the main difference from the previous Valentine’s Week, non of them had this pre-informative step, this extra planning benefited the success of this project and as more people knew, more orders we had and more money was raised.
It was very pleasing to see teachers and students embarrassed and happy when receiving serenates and letters, it really created a better environment in school. We received great feedback from teachers and friends and this was extremely satisfying.
